Tata Steel is committed to the partnership with the government of Odisha for setting up of a 6 million tonne per annum integrated steel plant at Kalinganagar Industrial Complex at Duburi, district of Jajpur. The Steel Works will be established in two modules of 3 million tonnes of steel each and when completed, will have a capacity of 6 million tonnes of steel per annum.
Preliminary work on land acquisition, rehabilitation and resettlement is in full swing and the Company has sought the grant of the mining lease from the Odisha State Government. The order for equipment and services, as per the MOU signed earlier has already been placed as agreed upon. Special attention has been given to all the requirements of the families in rehabilitation colonies and resettlement camps that are fully equipped with all amenities.
When operational, the Kalinganagar Works will generate revenues in the range of Rs 2,200 crores per annum.

The MOU was signed on November 17, 2004 for the steel project. The Steel Plant will come in its final form under two modules of 3 million tonnes each. MOU has also been signed with the Nippon Steel Corporation on August 28, 2005 to provide technical assistance for the project. The project will contribute to the government exchequer by Rs. 2200 Crores/year. It will also provide direct and indirect employment to about 20,000 people. The project will boost the pace of industrialisation & socio-economic development in the State as well as in the Country.
Social Initiatives at Kalinganagar
Employment Generation
The Kalinganagar project will generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for an estimated 20,000 people and the Company is conducting skill development training programmes in the region to facilitate self-sufficiency among people. A large number from the young population has already been engaged in befitting jobs with Tata Steel’s construction partners.
Specialized trainings were provided through three different training centres at Duburi, Baragadia and Danagadai. In the year 2008- 09, 670 young men were trained and of them 316 have been placed.
Healthcare
TSRDS provides General Medical Services through its clinics to the affected families at the three permanent resettlements (Trijanga, Sansailo, Maniapatla), three temporary resettlement areas (Dangadi-1, Dangadi-2 and Gobarghati) and to the nine peripheral villages at Kalinganagar through the mobile medical units. About 22,000 patients were reached out in year 2008-09.
Five Sanjeevani Health Camps were organised at different locations where doctors from Hi Tech Medical College, BBSR treated approximately 1400 patients with general and specific ailments. The patients were also provided with free medicines.
School health check-up Camps were held at the tribal residential schools.
Monthly health check-up camps were organised at the four tribal residential schools. Through these health check-up camps over 1500 children were treated.
Drinking water
Drinking water being a major concern and a basic necessity 44 tube-wells were installed to address the drinking water issue.
Four clubs were assisted to organise football tournaments during the year. A team of players were sent from the sports feeder centre to the selection camp organised by the State football association at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack. Two boys were selected to represent the State team in the under 19 team at Bhilai, Chhattisgarh.
Cricket:
Three clubs were assisted to organise cricket tournaments to promote sports and mobilisation of the local youth.
Sports Feeder Centre:
Tata Steel’s Sports Feeder Centre in Kalinganagar, set up in 2008, aim to harness and train young sports talents. It provides basic training in football and archery to young talents of the state in a phased manner. In order to identify the talents for centre, the talent hunts are carried out in Bhubaneswar, Duburi, Sukinda, Bamnipal, Joda and other parts of the State.
Inter-Feeder centre tournaments are conducted to identify the most potential candidates who are then selected for specialised training in Tata Steel’s Sports Academies. Athletes from the feeder centre represent their state as well as their nation in various sports tournaments both national and international.
