Tata Steel Group is among the top 10 steel makers in the world with operations across the globe. Major steel making operations are located in India, UK, The Netherlands, Singapore and Thailand. With demand for steel becoming stronger, Tata Steel is expanding its production capacity in India and has some Greenfield steel projects under implementation, including the one at Kalinganagar Industrial complex at Jajpur in Odisha.
Tata Steel’s involvement in the story of Odisha’s development began with the setting up of Asia’s first integrated steel plant in undivided Odisha in 1907. The Iron ore deposits in Mayurbhanj (leased out to the Company by the Maharaja of Mayurbhanj) were linked with a railway line to Tatanagar and this step towards strengthening the bond between the steel plant at Jamshedpur and the mineral deposits in Odisha has continued to be reinforced even in the 20th Century.
To use Manganese ore, Tata Steel introduced a Ferro-manganese Plant at Joda. The Company has also acquired some fireclay lease in the district of Sambalpur. A refractory plant was established in the vicinity of the fireclay deposits at Belpahar and a subsidiary company, later renamed Tata Refractories was set up. This plant has grown into a large refractory complex and is now one of the leading refractory manufacturers in India.
With the Kalinganagar project all poised to bring about one of the most significant industrial breakthroughs in the State’s development, other Tata Group ventures that are in the offing include:
A deep-sea port at Dhamra, as a joint venture between Tata Steel and Larsen & Toubro.
An industrial hub at Gopalpur in partnership with the Odisha State Government.
A Cold Rolled processing unit at Gopalpur.
A 2000 MW Power Plant at Naraj, Marthapur by Tata Power.
Enhancement of Telecom Services across Odisha by Tata Teleservices.
Global Software Development Centre by Tata Consultancy Services at Bhubaneshwar.
