Tata Steel’s enduring partnership with Odisha is aimed to bring all-round development in the State. The Company has manifold sustainability programmes that have been specially designed to cater to the needs of the Oriya population. The initiatives are dynamic and include on-going programmes that have always made way to the news. This section seeks to keep track of regular events as and when it happens.
Under Jyoti Fellowship Scholarship programme, Tata Steel has provided financial assistance to meritorious students from the economically backward Schedule Tribe and Schedule Caste communities.
As part of this initiative a "Jyoti Fellowship Scholarship" was distributed to the students in Joda area in Keonjhar district of Odisha. A distribution ceremony was organised by Tata Steel in association with Tata Steel Rural Development Society &Tribal Culture Society (TCS) at the Chandrasekhar College campus, Champua on 19th March 2012.
Mr. DV Swami, Collector, Keonjhar joined as Chief Guest and Mr. Bijay Ketan Upadhya, Sub-Collector, Champua joined as Guest of honour on the occasion. Mr. DB Sundara Ramam, General Manager, OMQ and Mr RR Sathpathy, Chief (Joda) were among the dignitaries present on this occasion.
Jyoti Fellowship is a noble cause undertaken by the Tribal Culture Society (TCS) of Tata Steel. Through this fellowship TCS is supporting underprivileged SC/ST students of standard seven and above. This is for the first year that Jyoti Fellowship was started at Joda.
241 students from 27 schools were provided the fellowship. This includes 108 boys and 133 girls from Std. 7th to graduation. The fellowship amount for students reading in standard 7th & 8th are Rs 2500 and it is Rs 3000 for students studying in standard 9th & 10th. While students of standard 11th& 12th are provided Rs 3500, the degree students are provided Rs 4000 as a fellowship.
Tata Steel Rural Development Society has been endeavouring for promotion of sports among the youth of the peripheral villages of Odisha Project of Tata Steel. It organised an Inter-Village Volleyball Tournament at Chhatrakana village under Kumbhiragadia Gram Panchayat in Jajpur district of Odisha.
Since Volleyball is also one of the most loved sports in peripheral villages of Kalinganagar, TSRDS organised a 3 day floodlight Inter-village knockout volleyball tournament from 10th to 12th March 2012. Eight teams participated in this tournament.
The final match was played between OMC Ferro-chrome and Manatira with OMC Ferrochrome team winning by 25 – 17 and 25 – 22 points. The referee Mr. Asit Kumar Pal conducted the whole tournament.
Mr Bimbadhar Khillar, Sarpanch of Kumbhiragadia GP joined as Chief Guest and Mr Deepak Samal, Samiti Member, Jakhapura Gram Panchayat joined as Guest of Honour at the presentation ceremony and gave away the awards. Dr Pranab Kumar Das, Unit Head, TSRDS (Kalinganagar) facilitated the conduct of the tournament.
Tata Steel, which has more than a century-old relationship with Odisha, has always endeavoured to augment the employability of youths in the State. Towards this end, the Company has been imparting skills upgradation training to the youths in its operational areas like Kalinganagar, Joda, Sukinda and Gopalpur, among others.
In Kalinganagar, where the steel major is setting up a 6 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) greenfield steel plant, for the nominated members of the displaced families, a specially designed skills upgradation training programme ‘Prerana’ (Inspiration) was launched. Trainees were imparted training on construction & industrial skills. The training also focused on personality development, memory skills, safety, behaviour, attitude etc. The training modules are certified by Nettur Technical Training Foundation (NTTF), a reputed name in the field of technical education. Under this programme, 401 persons have been trained, including 13 in security and fire fighting, 129 in welding technology, 146 in construction skills and 58 in Diploma courses.
For improving the employability of the youth around the project site at Kalinganagar, the Company had earlier assisted CAP Foundation to impart training to the local youths (other than the Project Affected Persons). Four hundred and fifty youths including 154 girls were imparted training in sales & marketing, automobile repairing, hospitality services and mobile repairing services, among others. In Joda, where Tata Steel has presence, 20 youths were sponsored for pursuing technical education at J N Tata Technical Education Centre (JNTTEC), Gopalpur. This institute is known for quality education and 100 per cent placement.
Further, to enhance employability of people affected by Tata Steel’s project at Gopalpur, Tata Steel facilitated the admission of 164 youths to the ITI course at S.M.I.T., Berhampur, during the last academic session. Similarly, 27 youths were admitted to the Diploma course at the J N Tata Technical Education Centre, Gopalpur. Tata Steel is supporting by way of providing course fees and study materials to each of them.
As part of its sustainable livelihood initiatives, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) is collaborating with the Chennai-based Pan IIT Alumni Reach for India to facilitate gainful employment for the local youths in Sukinda area. Recently, 30 youths from the local area were sent to Chennai for training in welding at the Pan IIT Alumni Reach for India.
The 173rd birth anniversary of the great visionary Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was celebrated as Founder's Day on 3rd March 2012 in various operational locations of Tata Steel in Odisha with fervour and gaiety.The locations where the Founder’s Day was celebrated includes Joda, Sukinda, Kalinganagar, Gopalpur, Bamnipal and Bhubaneswar among others.
Officials and the employees of Tata Steel paid floral tribute to J.N. Tata as a sincere recognition of the exemplary genius that inspired him to dream, explore, and find means of translating a vision into reality.
At Kalinganagar, where Tata Steel is putting up a 6 million tonne per annum integrated steel project, the birth anniversary of the Founder was observed with a lot of enthusiasm at Ambagadia. In the morning, Mr Hridayeshwar Jha, Vice President, Odisha Project paid floral tributes to the Founder. Senior officials of various departments of Tata Steel, senior members of Tata Steel Parivar and Vistapit Unnayan Parishad participated in the programme.
The 173rd birth anniversary of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was celebrated at the Chief Resident Executive (CRE) Office in Bhubaneswar with one of the oldest and trusted hand of Tata Steel joining the celebrations. Mr Nanda K Patnaik and Mr P K Das( former CREs), Mr Mohit Das, Chief, Stakeholder Management (Rawmaterials), Mr P K Rout, Mr S C Sahu, Mrs Leena Chintak, Mrs Happy Patnaik, Mr Digza Prasad, Mr A K Das were among the dignitaries present on this occasion.
Rich tributes were paid to the Founder on his 173rd birth anniversary at Gopalpur. Mr A K Ojha, GM (Gopalpur Project), Mr Anjan Sengupta, Head, Re-bar Mill and Dr N C Mohanta, Head, Rehabilitation & Resettlement, paid floral tributes to the great visionary. Employees of Ferro Alloys Plant, Bamnipal gathered before the Founder’s statue and paid homage.
Tata Steel Joda Mines division at Joda celebrated the Founder’s Day with much pomp and show. In the morning, a procession of school students, teachers, and Tata Steel officials were taken out. In a function held at the Joda East Recreation Club, Mr R R Satpathy, Chief (Joda) offered floral tributes to the legendary founder. Sweets were distributed among the school children. A sports meet was organised at Joda East Children’s Park in which all employees and officers along with their family members participated. Prizes were distributed to the winners of the sports competition.
Rich tributes were also paid to the Founder at Khondbond Iron Mine (KIM), Ferro Alloys Plant (Joda) and other mines locations. Similarly, at Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM),rich tributes were paid to the Founder by Mr G K Guin, Head (MPP), FAMD. Dy President of the SCM Workers’ Union also paid homage to the Founder on this occasion.
Dr. Jaysingh Majhi, Associate Specialist (Gynecology) of Tata Steel’s Sukinda Chromite Mine Hospital along with Union officials distributed sweets to the children. Mr Ashok Ghosh, Head (Admn), SCM distributed prizes to the winners of sports competition held among the camp ladies and children on this occasion.
Believing that a happy workforce is a productive workforce, Tata Steel has always extended its support to the cause of employee welfare and development thereby ensuring an enriched life for all its people. To provide wholesome entertainment and opportunity for social gatherings, a new KPO Officers Club has come up at Kalinganagar.
After a day’s hard work, the Officers need some relaxation and entertainment. The newly formed Officers’ Club, Umang at Kalinganagar is set to provide the members exactly that.
At the end of a day’s hard work, it was yet another tough day at Odisha Project, a day full of meetings, follow up and decision making. As the sun called its day off, a new beginning was about to be unfolded -the formal roll out of “UMANG” – KPO Officer’s Club.
With a great deal of involvement and support of senior management, KPO Officer’s Club was founded on 21st February, 2012. The new founded Club is destined to bring immense enthusiasm and happiness to the KPO family at Kalinganagar. With the onset of the evening on that day, the members and their families started coming to the venue and the turnout was brilliant. It was a great opportunity to socialise and a tremendous platform to mingle with our own colleagues.
Mr Hridayeshwar Jha, VP, Odisha Project of Tata Steel, who happens to be Honorary Chairman of the Club, joined the inaugural session. In his opening remarks, Mr Jha congratulated the Officers for the initiative and pledged to support the same.It was followed by an introduction of the core committee members by Mr P K Ghose, Chief (OP), who happens to be the Honorary President of the Club. The committee consists of 19 Officers along with officer representatives from different Guest Houses of the Company. The name and logo of the club were unveiled on this occasion. Making the event more pleasant and enjoyable, the officers and their families participated in the game of ‘TAMBOLA’ hosted by Mr P K Nirwan, Chief of Safety who has been chosen as the General Secretary of the Club.
The evening saw an unprecedented excitement when the music started and the officers hit the dance floor. The families enjoyed the gala dinner and rocked with the music. It was a pleasant evening which inculcated a sense of team spirit and togetherness by encouraging the involvement and gathering of officers and their families.
The Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP), Joda organised the Annual Sports at Baneikala ground on 26th February, 2012. Various sports events which started from the morning, continued till late in the evening. The function organised by HR/IR Department of FAP sought to ensure participation of our employees, their family members and the people of the surrounding villages.
The workers, officers, women, boys and girls from the neighbouring villages participated in sports events in large number. In the evening, the ground was illuminated with the help of high mast lights. Mr B Srinivas, Senior Manager (Maintenance) FAP, Mr DD Parida, Sr. Manager (operations), FAP, Mr PV Rao, Secretary, Workers’ Union, Sri N Patro, President of the Workers’ Union, Sri. BK Das, Asst. Manager (Safety), Mr ML Sinha Senior Manager, HR/IR joined as guests. The guests also distributed prizes to the winners.
Over the years, Tata Steel has placed continuous emphasis on improving processes, with a view to consistently increasing efficiencies, enhancing quality and thereby achieving better performance benchmarks in all areas.
In this context, to boost the morale of the employees and encourage them to give more suggestions, a suggestion management workshop was organised by Bichakundi Manganese Mine on 21st February 2012. The workshop was organised by the Human Resource Department of the unit. Officers and members of the suggestion committee attended the workshop held at the conference hall of Bichakundi Manganese Mine. Mr Santosh Kumar, Manager, conducted the workshop.
The workshop aimed at familiarising members with On-line Suggestion Management System and increasing the involvement of employees in giving suggestions.
First aid training comes in handy for a variety of different situations in life. Although many people receive this training strictly due to a job requirement, it is actually something that can benefit anyone's life. In this context, Gopalpur project of Tata Steel organized a First Aid Training for work site supervisors and educated local youths who are involved in the project work.
The training sought to provide them with a sense of safe work environment and made them realize the importance of first aid in their day to day life on work site as well as home.
Thirty work site supervisors and local youths attended the first aid training held from 22nd February to 24th February 2012. Mr AK Ojha, General Manager, Gopalpur Project joined the valedictory ceremony.
To enhance production and productivity in agriculture, particularly in Kotpali village under Nayagarh Gram Panchayat in Champua block of Keonjhar district, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) started an innovative measure. In partnership with the Odisha government, TSRDS has started a scheme for distribution of Power Tillers among the farmers of Kotpali village. Under the scheme, 60 percent subsidy is provided by the State government.
While the farmers provided 20 percent cost of the Power Tillers, the remaining 20 percent was contributed jointly by Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP), Joda and TSRDS. Joda wing of TSRDS formed four Farmers’ Group in Kotpali and identified about 80 acres of wasteland for agricultural purpose in the village. Tata Steel plans to set up a Silico-Manganese plant in Nayagarh area. TSRDS mobilised 52 farmers and imparted training to them. Further, to facilitate irrigation in the area, it constructed a check dam to enable the farmers to take up multiple-cropping.
Taking the process forward, in the first phase, power-tillers were handed over to the farmers jointly by Dr B K Upadhaya, IAS, Sub-Collector, Champua and Mr D.B SundaraRamam, General Manager, OMQ.

In yet another endeavour to provide better health care to the people living in its operational areas, especially children, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) participated in the Pulse Polio programme in Sukinda area.
Under the Pulse Polio Programme, TSRDS provided polio drops to all the children (up to the age of 5 years) belonging to 4 Gram Panchayts (GPs) in the area. Mr Sushanta Kumar Mishra, Chief (Mining), Sukinda Chromite Mines (SCM) inaugurated the programme.
Under the Cold Chain ILR point (Ice Line Refrigeretor), it provided pulse polio drops to 2154 children in Ransol, Chingudiapal, Kaliapani and Kansa GP. Under Ransol GP, Makdia Basti, Kalarangi, Ransol and Kusumundia villages were covered.
Similarly, Benagadia, Chingudipal, Natore, Devgaon, Patana and Oradapal villages were covered under Chingudiapal Gram Panchayats. While OMC Township, Kaliapani, Gurujanga were covered under Kaliapani Gram Panchayat, Saruabil, Ostopal, Kansa, Sukurangi and Tikarapada villages were covered under Kansa Gram Panchayat.
Mr Prasant Baral, Block Programme Officer, CHC Sukinda, Mr Kailash Swain, Supervisor, Mr Ashok Baipai(Male Health Worker), Mrs Snehalata Goswami, ANM, Kaliapani extended all support for smooth conduction of the programme.
A musical entertainment programme was organised at the Valley Club, Joda on 16th February 2012. It was organised by the officers of FAMD on the sidelines of a get-together for manganese business.
Mr Rajiv Singhal, EIC, FAMD and Mr Anurag Dixit, Chief, Khondbond Iron Mine (KIM) were among the dignitaries present on this occasion. Senior officers from Kolkata, Sukinda, Bamnipal and Gomardih office of FAMD also attended the function.
Earlier, the employees of Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP) organised a picnic on the night of 15th February 2012 in the premises of FAP. The employees actively participated in the lottery and games before joining the dinner.
To promote sports in rural areas, particularly volleyball, Tata Steel kicked off the Pragati Inter-village Volleyball Tournament at Gopalpur. Mr Pradip Kumar Mohanty, Secretary, Odisha Volleyball Association (OVA) inaugurated the tournament on 15th February 2012.
The tournament, being organised for the locals of Gopalpur and its periphery villages, generated a lot of excitement among the local villagers. Sixty-four teams from nearby villages like Chhatrapur, Jagannathpur, Chamakhandi, Arjipalli and Narendrapur are taking part in it. The tournament is being organised in four zones with 16 teams taking part in each zone.
The inaugural match was played between Patrapur and Paschimeswar Club at the Rehabilitation & Resettlement (R&R) Colony of Tata Steel at Badapaur with the Paschimeswar Club of Sanakusasthali winning the match by 24 to 13 points.
Mr Anjan Sengupta, Head (Re-bar Mill) of Gopalpur Industrial Park (GIP), was among the dignitaries present on this occasion. This initiative of the steel major follows similar initiatives at Kalinganagar where the Company is setting up a 6 million tonne Greenfield integrated steel project, and at Joda, in Keonjhar district.
Tata Steel always actively encouraged and supported sports in Odisha in multiple ways. To further spread sports among the rural masses, Tata Football Academy (TFA) and Tata Archery Academy (TAA) regularly organise Coaching-Talent Hunt Camps in different parts of Odisha.
Tata Steel has been endeavoring to promote healthy lifestyles among its employees and their families. In this regard, the Company has been organising awareness programmes in areas where it operates.
The most recent instance of such an initiative was the conduct of a health awareness programme at Bichakundi in Keonjhar district in Odisha on 8th February 2012. Employees of Bichakundi Manganese Mine actively participated in the awareness session.
Dr. D Satpathy of Tata Hospital, Joda chaired a session on the occurrence of common diseases among the employees of manganese mines. Besides, emphasis was also given on prevention of diseases like diabetes, blood pressure and hypertension among others.
Bee Keeping is an agro based enterprise, which farmers can take up for additional income generation. In this context, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), Bamnipal organised a two day training on apiculture in collaboration with Balasore Bee Keeping Society.
The training was organised at Dahar Sahi, a village near Bamnipal in Keonjhar district of Odisha on 8th & 9th February 2012. It aimed at supporting these farmers to do apiculture systematically. It was attended by 16 farmers belonging to the villages surrounding Bamnipal. Mr Prafulla Chandra Mahanta from Balasore Bee Keeping Society joined as trainer in the awareness camp.
On the second day of the training programme, farmers were taken to the field to catch bees. The trainer guided the trainees for catching the Queen Bee and the group. TSRDS provided the necessary kit to the farmers for apiculture. The trainer also guided the participating farmers in proper use of the instruments.
Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), in association with Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) Hospital organised a tubectomy camp on 7th February 2012. Dr. SK Dua, Chief Medical Officer, SCM Hospital inaugurated the camp. In all, 51 cases were operated on after final evaluation.
Dr. RN Senapati, Specialist in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, performed the tubectomy operations. All doctors and staff nurses of SCM Hospital actively participated in the camp. Dr. Jayant Kumar Tripathy, Senior Medical Officer, TSRDS and Mr Satya Narayan Nanda, Unit Head of TSRDS, Sukinda coordinated the event.
Next day, TSRDS in collaboration with District Blind Control Society, Jajpur, organised a follow-up cataract surgery camp for the patients who had undergone cataract operations on 29th December, 2011 and 29th January 2012.
Tata Steel has been taking proactive measures to promote education in the remote villages in and around its areas of operation. As an endeavour in this direction, OMQ Division of Tata Steel in collaboration with DAV Public School Authorities has set up a new DAV Public School at Joda in Keonjhar district of Odisha.
To improve the quality of education available to the community, Tata Steel has set up a new DAV School at Joda in Keonjhar district of Odisha. The new Tata-DAV Public School is located near the Vocational Training Centre at Joda West.The classes (from Nursery to Class-IV) will start from the 2012-13 academic session.
Tata Steel has extended all the support required for functioning of the School like new building, desk & benches, computers and other study materials. Initially, educational instructions would be available from nursery to Class IV in CBSE pattern.
Mr HM Nerurkar, Managing Director of Tata Steel, during his visit to Joda in the last week of December 2011 had visited the newly constructed school building. This institution is expected to improve the quality of education of the children in Joda area.
Due to lack of awareness, a good number of people in Bamnipal area suffer from diseases related to water & sanitation. Though preventive measures can reduce the menace, traditional practices and lack of awareness act as the stumbling block in this regard.
In this backdrop, the Bamnipal unit of the Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) organised a series of awareness programmes pertaining to water and sanitation. It organised ten awareness programmes in the nearby areas during May-November, 2011. In all, 528 participants including 265 women participated in these awareness programmes. The local PRI members, Anganwadi workers and ASHA workers were roped in for these programmes.
During the awareness sessions, efforts were made to convey the message in a simple manner. The deliberations focused on choice of safe drinking water & its preservation, cleanliness, sanitation, use of toilet, food hygiene, etc. Similarly, emphasis was given on children’s health, as they are the most affected.
Republic Day, one of the important national celebrations of India, was observed by the OMQ Division of Tata Steel.
A grand celebration was organised at the Joda Central Play Ground to observe the 63rd Republic Day. Mr RR Satpathy, Chief (Joda) joined as Chief Guest and hoisted the national flag. School children from 13 nearby schools took part in the programme. Mr Sathpathy distributed fruits to indoor patients of the Tata Steel Hospital, Joda.
An exhibition cricket match was also organised between JCO, Khandbond & JEIM employees on this occasion. The 63rd Republic day was also celebrated at the Ferro Alloys Plant (Joda), Bichakundi Manganese Mine, Malda Manganese Mine, Bamebari Manganese Mine.
Mr BD Nanda, Head (FAP) hoisted the national flag in the presence of officials and employees of FAP. Six employees were awarded for their long service.
Mr Manikanta Naik, Head, Manganese Group of Mines hoisted the national flag at the Bichakundi Manganese Mine in the presence of officials, employees and local people. At Bamebari Manganese Mine, Mr. Asit Nayak (Sr. Manager, Mines Operation) hoisted the national flag.
The 63rd Republic Day was celebrated by Tata Steel at Gopalpur. March past, flag hoisting and sports events marked the celebrations. Mr A K Ojha, General Manager, Gopalpur Project hoisted the national flag at the project site office near NTTF, Gopalpur.
While Mr Daniel Das hoisted the tricolor at the project site in the presence of Mr Ojha and Mr Anjan Sengupta, Head (Projects), Dr NC Mohanta, Head, Rehabilitation & Re-settlement (R&R) hoisted the national flag at the Rehabilitation Colony.
A friendly cricket match between our associate partners M/s Das & Sons and Tata Steel was organised. Tata Steel team led by Mr AK Ojha, GM won the match by seven wickets. A music chair contest for women was also organised on this occasion.
The 63rd Republic Day was observed by Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) with a lot of joy and enthusiasm. National flag was hoisted at the Chrome Ore Beneficiation (COB) Plant, Atwal Workshop, Stewart School, Sisumandir and the Central Playground. Mr LS Divakera, General Manager, unfurled the tricolor and took the salute at the Central Playground.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Divakera stressed upon the necessity of economic growth, education, honesty and community development initiatives for the Society.
School children from Saraswati Sisu Mandir, Stewart School, Shramasakti High School and Bravo Security took part in the parade. Guide team of Stewart School was adjudged the best parade team while Saraswati Sisu Mandir was the runners’ up.
Long service awards were given away to 112 employees of Sukinda who have rendered service ranging from 20 to 40 years. While special award for bravery was given away to 10 security personnel, 32 meritorious school students were provided scholarships. Later, Mr Divakera joined the awardees in a tea party.
Accompanied by Mr RC Pradhan, General Secretary and Mr BK Sahu, President of the SCM Workers’ Union, Mr Divakera went to the SCM Hospital and distributed fruits to the patients. In the evening, Mr Divakera joined the officers in a patriotic programme held at the Chrome Valley Club.
Mr GP Sahu, Head FAP, Bamnipal along with union officials unfurled the National flag on the 63rd Republic Day on 26th of January 2012. Eligible employees received long service awards from Head, FAP on this special occasion and meritorious school children also received awards on this occasion.
Earlier, a suggestion award function was organized on 21st January, 2012. Mr GP Sahu, Head, FAP (Bamnipal) awarded forty eight employees for their valuable suggestions for implementation, giving benefits to the organization.
Aroids are grown globally and they have the potential to increase world food production. However, only a limited number of aroids are cultivated as food crops, compared tothe large number of aroids grown as ornamental plants.
In this context, to create awareness among the farmers regarding the importance of aroid crop as well as up scaling the area under aroid cultivation through use of appropriate technology identified by the scientists, a special session on Farmers-Scientist-Industry interface on aroid crops was organised at Bhubaneswar.
Tata Steel, which has been piloting various farmers’ training programmes in Odisha, sponsored the session. It was organised on the sidelines of a Global Conference on Aroidson 24th January 2012. About 70 farmers from Odisha, Bihar, Chattisgarh and West Bengal participated in the session. There were 13 presentations on the topic from different quarters like scientific research, farming community (Bihar and Odisha), industry and NGO. 35 farmers from Tata Steel’s operational areas like Joda, Kalinganagar, Gopalpur and Bamnipal actively participated in the workshop.
Dr VP Updhayay, Director (S), Ministry of Environment and Forests, Eastern Regional Office, Bhubaneswar and Chairman of the session, emphasized that the research output of scientists should not be confined to laboratories. Instead, it should reach farmers field, enabling them to take advantage of technology. He also pointed out that tuber crops are farmer friendly as it requires lesser water, input and human resource while rendering more output.
Dr SK Naskar, Director, Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Trivandrum briefed about the initiation of the introduction of aroids in Odisha through Orissa Tribal Empowerment and Livelihoods Programme. Since farmers were keen to have more knowledge pertaining to different aspects of Aroids like availability of seeds, skills for cultivation, marketing and profitability of aroids, the deliberations of the session came in handy for them.

Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), in association with the Bhubaneswar based SM Foundation and Tata Steel Hospital, Joda organised a two day cataract operations camp at Joda in Keonjhar district of Odisha on 19th & 20th January, 2012.
Mr Bijay Ketan Upadhya, Sub Collector of Champua sub-division inaugurated the camp. About 332 patients hailing from Joda, Barbil, Champua, Koida area availed the services of the camp organised at the Joda West Auditorium Hall. Out of them, cataract operations of 140 patients were performed by SM Foundation led by Dr Srimant Mishra.

The Manganese Group of Mines (MGM) of Tata Steel located in Keonjhar and Sundergarh districts, won eleven prizes in different categories at the 14th Mines Environment & Mineral Conservation Week-2011-12. The 14th Mines & Mineral Conservation Week was organised under the aegis of Regional Office of the Indian Bureau of Mines, Bhubaneswar. Mr Ranjan Sahai, Controller of Mines (CZ), IBM joined as the Chief Guest.
During the concluding day celebration in Bhubaneswar, Joda West Managanese Mine of Tata Steel bagged 6 awards. While it won the first prize for Waste Dump Management and Top Soil Management, the mine bagged the second prize in afforestation, installation & use of mechanised beneficiation facility and overall performance. Mr J K Moharana, Sr. Mines Foreman was given away the Paryabaran Bandhu Award (Non-Executive category).
Bamebari Manganese Mine also bagged the first prize in reclamation & rehabilitation, and noise, vibration & other scientific study. It also bagged the second prize in publicity & propaganda category. Similarly, Malda Manganese Mine bagged the first prize in publicity & propaganda and second prize in reclamation & rehabilitation category.
Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) has always endeavoured to provide better health services and improve quality of life of the people living in and around its areas of operations.
To ensure better health care services for the nearby villagers, TSRDS continues to substantiate its commitment by organizing health camps from time to time. It organised a free medical camp “Sanjeevani” at the Marutikar village under Kumbhiragadia Gram Panchayat in Danagadi Block under Jajpur district of Odisha.
The specialist doctors from Hi-Tech Medical College, Bhubaneswar including Dr Pradeep Behera (Medicine), Dr G S S Mohapatra and Dr Priya Gupta (Gynecology), Dr S V P Rao (Surgery) and Dr Sudeep Haldhar (Pediatric) treated the patients. Dr Pranab Kumar Das (Unit Head) and Dr Parameshwar Jena (Medicine specialist of TSRDS) assisted the team in consultation and treatment of the patients.
About 482 patients from Marutikar, Tikar, Kumbhiragadia, Khapuriapada, Kendudhipi villages availed the free service of the health camp.
Tata Steel has been working for the promotion of education in the Joda area in Keonjhar district of Odisha. It has taken up several measures for improving the school infrastructure in the nearby areas.
As a measure for improving the infrastructure at Joribar UP School under Joda Block, Ferro Alloys & Mineral Division (FAMD) constructed 3 additional classrooms. The newly constructed classrooms were inaugurated by Mr Sashanka Sekhar Das, Tehsildar of Barbil Tehsil.

FAMD division of Tata Steel renovated this School with an expenditure of Rs. 12 Lakh. The renovation work included construction of 3 additional classrooms, boundary wall, colouring and provision of new furniture.
Facilitating gainful employment to the youths in Sukinda area has been a priority area for the Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS). As part of its livelihood programme, TSRDS is providing in-house vocational training to the selected village youths in welding, driving and site safety.
Thirty youths belonging to Sukinda area were sent to Chennai based Pan IIT Alumni Reach for India on 16th January, 2011. The organization is engaged in providing skill development training and ensures 100 percent placement. Recently, TSRDS tied up with Pan IIT Alumni Reach for India.

Welding training would be imparted to those selected youths from 18th January to 1st March, 2012.
Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), in collaboration with the District Health Department, Jajpur organised an awareness camp on Bird flu at the weekly Tata Mines Haat. A loud speaker campaign was undertaken at the Weekly Tata Mines Haat for the people belonging tofour nearby Gram Panchayats.
The message, focusing on what to do and what not to do regarding Bird Flu was successfully disseminated among more than 800 villagers in four different languages including the Adibasi Munda language. The programme provided a two way interactive forum where people raised several questions and were provided with clarifications.

To assist aged people to get back their lost vision in Bamnipal area, TSRDS in collaboration with District Blind Control Society (DBCS), Keonjhar organized a Cataract operation camp recently.
The screening camp was organized on 8th December, 2011 at Bamnipal. After screening by the DBCS medical team, 15 patients were sent for operations at DBCS, Keonjhar from 21st to 24th December 2011.
The cataract operations were successfully conducted on 22nd & 23rd December, 2011. Out of the 15 patients, 14 had cataract operations with IOL and only one patient had trachoma, which was also operated upon.
TSRDS facilitated transportation of the patients, provided medicine, dark glass, food, etc. All the patients were given the necessary instructions to take care of themselves. The office of the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), Keonjhar extended all possible support for the conduct of the camp.
Aimed at developing leadership quality among the local youth, Sukinda wing of the Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) organised an Outdoor Youth Leadership Camp at Tumung, Jamshedpur.
The three day camp was organised from 28th- 30th December, 2011, in collaboration with Tata Steel Adventure Foundation. Thirty six people belonging to the nearby villages surrounding Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) participated in this camp.

In an interactive session some boys expressed that their confidence level has gone up due to their participation in the camp.
Fun, bonhomie and other human attributes which flow when people from various walks of life meet on the ground, were visible in the Festival Cricket Tournament organised by Tata Steel at Joda. The cricket match, organised by Tata Steel for the second time at the Central Playground, Joda, generated enough enthusiasm and fun.
Seven teams - Tata Steel Officers’ Team, Joda Press Club Team, Tata Steel Union Team, Joda Municipality Councillors’ Team, Joda Block PRIs Team and Barbil Press Club Team participated in the tournament. Mr Bijay Ketan Upadhya, Sub Collector, Champua joined as the chief guest and inaugurated the tournament.
In the finals on 9th January, 2012, Keonjhar Press Club became the Champions for the 2nd time by defeating Joda Press Club. Vindicating the involvement of the spouses of senior executives in the periphery development activities in Sukinda area, Mrs Mausumi Sengupta, wife of Mr Partha Sengupta, VP (Raw Materials), visited the Siriakhali Ashram School located near the Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM).
Mrs Sengupta inaugurated the new hall of the Siriakhali Ashram School constructed by Tata Steel. She also distributed utensils to the students of the school. After discussions, Mrs Sengupta advised both the students and teachers to work for reducing the drop out rate.
Sukinda unit of Tata Steel has partially adopted the Siriakhali Ashram School where more than 285 Schedule Caste & Scheduled Tribe children are studying.Tata Steel plans to spend about Rs 30 lakh for the development of this residential school. Initially, one hall, a deep bore well and water supply system has been put in place. A transformer is also being installed to augment the availability of electricity. During her visit, Mrs Sengupta was accompanied by Mrs Rashmirekha Mishra, Mrs Sujata Guin, Mrs Kankana Ghosh, and Mrs Sarika Ranjan among others.
Though Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) can contribute to the spread of HIV, awareness about STI can help in prevention of HIV. In this backdrop, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) organised an awareness camp on STI and HIV for the women living in Bamnipal area recently.
Forty seven women including 9 teenaged girls attended the awareness camp organised at Panganal, a tribal village in the Bamnipal periphery. Mr. S. Tarafder, Unit Head of TSRDS (Bamnipal) facilitated conduct of the awareness camp.
The deliberations focused on gynecological & STI problems of women and on HIV & AIDS. Emphasis was given on prevention, safe sex and timely treatment. The participants were explained about the symptoms of infection, possible reasons and curative action.
Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) of Tata Steel celebrated the 14th Mines Environment and Mineral Conservation Week; 2011-12 with lots of enthusiasm.
The week started on 2nd January, 2012 with flag hoisting at engineering complex. Mr Sushant K Mishra, Chief (Mining), flagged off the Parivesh Rath on this occasion which seeks to spread awareness on Energy Conservation during the week. An independent inspection team comprising of eminent mining engineers from different companies and headed by IBM moderator Mr Prem Prakash inspected SCM on 3rd Jan’ 2012. The team appreciated Tata Steel’s efforts forprotection of the environment and mineral conservation.
The publicity & propaganda function was organized in the evening at the Recreation Club. Mr O B Krishna, Chief of Corporate Safety was present on this occasion. Education is a basic human right which is fundamental to personal and societal development. In yet another endeavour to facilitate education in the Salijanga area under the Danagadi block in Jajpur district of Odisha, Tata Steel constructed the Salijanga High School Building.
Sri Prafulla Chandra Ghadai, Hon’ble minister for Finance and Public Enterprises, Govt of Odhisa inaugurated the new Saljijanga High School building which has been constructed by Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloys Plant, Bamnipal.
The school building, having an area of 825 Square feet was constructed by FAP, Bamnipal with an expenditure of Rs 5.21 lakhs. Speaking on this occasion, Sri Ghadai appreciated the periphery work done by the Bamnipal unit of Tata Steel in villages located in Danagadi, Ghasipura & Harichandanpur Blocks of Keonjhar district.
To provide effective health services at the doorstep of the poor tribal villagers living in Bamebari and the adjoining areas under Joda block in Keonjhar district of Odisha, the Tata Steel introduced a new Ambulance Van on 4th January, 2012.

The new Ambulance service was introduced by the Ferro Alloys & Manganese Division, Tata Steel Hospital, Joda and the Joda unit of the Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), Joda. The van is equipped with emergency kit, malaria test kit, medicines, oxygen mask with cylinder, blood pressure measurement kits etc.

Mr Madan Mohan Mohapatra, Gynaecologist of Keonjhar District Hospital along with his paramedical staff carried out 28 family planning operations using Laparoscopic method. Hundreds of local villagers took the benefit of the health check-up camp and free medication.
Mr Badri Narayan Patra, Hon’ble Minister for Higher Education, Sports and Youth services, Govt. of Odisha inaugurated two school buildings constructed by the Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP) of Tata Steel located at Bamnipal. Those schools located at Dardipal and Tolakanedi in Keonjhar district of Odisha were inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister on 18th December, 2011.

Tata Steel’s Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP) at Joda in Keonjhar district organised the Inter District Knockout Badminton Tournament. It was organisedat the Banaikela Recreation Club. The tournament was organised from 8th to 11th December, 2011 and it was inaugurated by Mr R R Sathpathy, Chief (Joda). Mr B K Upadhaya, Sub Collector, Champua joined as the Chief Guest in the final prize giving ceremony. Mr U C Jena, Deputy Director of Mines (DDM), Joda joined as the guest of honour.

Career counselling is vital for the students as it helps them in identifying the career path. With globalization and the changing economic scenario, new avenues of employment have cropped up. However, awareness about various job avenues, particularly the new ones is lacking in the school leaving stage.
In this context, the HR/IR department of Tata Steel organised a “Career Counselling Programme” at the Valley Club, Joda on 20th & 21st December, 2011. Renowned Career Counsellor Ms Nandita Sinha conducted the programme.
Ms Sinha gave a stepwise description of how a student should move from preparations to the actual test and what will be the role of his parents and teachers in this process. During the two day session, she gave complete descriptions of various courses to make a career.
More than 100 students from St.Teresa High School, Saraswati Sisu Vidya Mandir, Joda High School and Shiv Shankar Hindi High School participated in this programme.
As part of its initiative to illuminate the remote villages in Bamnipal area, the Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) installed Solar Street lights in remote tribal villages.
In the first phase, one solar street light was installed in each of five tribal villages. Solar lights were installed in Tarajhar, Dahar Sahi, Khajuria Pancham, Nuasahi (Santhal Sahi) and Nuasahi (Munda Sahi) villages.
While four of these villages are located in Keonjhar district, one is located in Jajpur district. The sites for the solar light installation were selected by the community. The move has benefited the villagers as the evening time is now being utilized for productive purposes like Adult Education Programme and Community meetings.

To ensure better health care facilities to the people living in Joda area of Keonjhar district in Odisha, Tata Steel has introduced a new Laparoscopy facility at its Hospital at Joda.
Mr D B Sundara Ramam General Manager (OMQ) inaugurated the new facility on 17th December, 2011. With this, Tata Steel Hospital, Joda has become the first Hospital in Keonjhar District to be equipped with this facility. The equipments have been procured at a cost of about Rs 22 lakhs.

Dr S Pradhan of the Tata Main Hospital, Jamshedpur explained the importance of the Laparoscopy facility through which better surgical treatments can be provided to the patients. Interestingly, in the first day itself, 3 operations were performed by using this facility.
Seeking treatment for even common diseases is difficult for many villagers due to monetary constraints. Since the problem is acute in rural areas, Tata Steel is working with various agencies and organisations to improve the health status of villagers in its operational areas. It organised a health check-up camp at the Aradapal village under Chingudipal Gram Panchayat in association with the local police administration. Various cultural and sports events were also organised on this occasion.
The Aradapal village is a remote village which is about 8 km away from Sukinda mines and doesn’t have even roads. As such, people lack the basic medical facilities. Tata Steel extended all the support like doctors, medicines and ambulance for this initiative taken by the local police. In all, 407 villagers availed the benefit of the health camp. Out of them, 16 patients were referred to Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) Hospital of Tata Steel for further investigation and management.
Dr Deepak Kumar, IPS, Superintendent of Police (SP), Jajpur along with Mr Raisen Murmu, IIC Kaliapani witnessed the programme along with other PRI members. Dr Kumar appreciated the efforts of Tata Steel to provide health services for the local stakeholders and the community.
Five Small Group Activity (SGA) teams from the OMQ Division of Tata Steel have brought laurels for the Company. They have bagged awards in the 25th National Convention on Quality Concepts (NCQC)-2011 that was just concluded. These groups participated and shared their case studies in the convention held at GNITS, Secunderabad from 9-12 December, 2011.
Based on their performances, SGA “Secondary Crusher” of Wet Process Plant of Joda received the Par Excellence award. Similarly, SGA “Unbrako” of Equipment & Mining division, Joda bagged the Par Excellence award.
SGA “Surkshit” of Equipment & Mining division, Joda, SGA “Autocart” of Motor Garage, Noamundi Iron Mine (NIM) and SGA “Jig-3 Hydrocyclone” of Process Plant-1, NIM also bagged the Excellence awards. Mr Prasant Kumar Barik of SGA “Secondary Crusher” bagged a consolation prize in essay competition at NCQC-2011 in the individual category.
This Quality Circle (QC) Convention was organized by the Quality Circle Forum of India (QCFI). About 986 QCs’ and 6000 delegates from as many as 330 different organizations of 21 different Chapters of QCFI across the country participated in the convention.
As part of the suggestion management initiative, a suggestion award function was organised by the Managanese Group of Mines (MGM) of Tata Steel. Sixty seven employees were recognised for their valuable suggestions in the function held on 30th November, 2011.
Sri Manikant Naik, Head, Manganese Mines and Sri P Mohanty, Secretary, Manganese Mines Workers’ Union, appreciated the efforts of the HR team to organize the function. On this occasion, Sri Naik urged the employees to give atleast 4 suggestions every year. Similarly, 15 employees were recognised for their exemplary behaviour in a function organised at Manganese Mines on 14th December, 2011.
Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) of Tata Steel won a number of prizes, both in individual and group categories, in the 49th Annual Mines Safety Week -2011 for Bhubaneswar Region. It won ten awards including the coveted first position in Overall Performance Category.
It bagged the first prize for recording and analysis of near miss and incidents, compliance of 10th Safety Conference Recommendations, best exhibition hall and overall performance. Similarly, SCM bagged the second prize in general workings, maintenance of HEMM and workshop, training and safety performance, survey, planning and statutory records & returns, plant, storage transport and use of explosives categories.
Sukinda Chromite Mine also won the rare distinction of launching the first ever women First Aid Team in the history of Mines Safety Week celebrations. Besides, one major partner of SCM, M/s G S Atwals also achieved a trail blazing performance by bagging three first prizes out of total five categories including Overall First position among the contractors.
Annual Mines Safety Week 2011-12 was organised by Orissa Metalliferous Mines Safety Week Celebration Committee under the aegis of Directorate General of Mines Safety, Bhubaneswar Region.
The East Coast Railway stadium in the capital city of Bhubaneswar witnessed a unique battle on the morning of 18th December 2011 with the top honchos, bureaucrats, legislators and the media taking part in the Festival Cricket Tournament organized by Tata Steel. Fun and bonhomie was witnessed throughout the Festival Cricket Tournament. Strengthening the bond of friendship between everybody present, the cricket match generated lots of enthusiasm and fun.
Mr. Sanjiv Paul, VP (Corporate Services) and Mr. Hridayeshwar Jha, VP (Odisha project) inaugurated the tournament. In the nail-biting final match, last year’s runners up Media-XI elected to bat first after winning the toss, and scored 143 runs for the loss of four wickets in 15 overs.
Mr. Subhranshu Padhi and Mr. Srinivas Panda contributed valuable 32 and 30 runs respectively. In reply, Mr Saswat Mishra of defending champion Officers’ team scored an unbeaten 38 runs and his mate Debidutta Biswal scored 32 runs but the team failed to reach the target and scored 123 runs in 15 overs for the loss of seven wickets. Media XI was declared as the Champion. Mr. Subhranshu Panda from the champion team bagged the ‘Man of the Final’ award.
Earlier in the semifinals, Officers’ XI defeated Leaders’ XI by seven wickets. Batting first, Leaders’ XI scored 54 runs in 10 overs for the loss of four wickets. In reply, Officers ‘XI reached winning target in 5.3 overs for the loss of three wickets. Mr Debi Prasad Biswal of the winning team grabbed was adjudged the man of the match.
Similarly, in the other semi final match, Media XI beat the host team Tata Steel by five wickets. Batting first, the host team scored 71 runs in 10 overs for the loss of six wickets. Mr. A Ajiz of Media XI smashed an unbeaten 33 runs and the team reached the target in 8.1 overs. Ajiz was declared the man of the match.
Mr. Firoz Ali and Mr. Pradosh Baliarsingh of the Media team received the best bowler and best fielder awards respectively. Mr. Saswat Mishra and Mr. Debi Priya Biswal of the runners-up team won the ‘Best Batsman’ and the ‘Man of the Tournament’ awards respectively.
The Leaders’ team was led by Hon’ble Deputy Chief Whip and MLA, Mr. Arun Kumar Sahu and the Officers’ team was led by Mr. S P Nanda, Chairman, OERC. While the Media team was led by Mr. K Ravi the Tata Steel team was led by Mr. Hridayeshwar Jha, Vice-President (Odisha Project).

With a view to keep the memory of the legendary singer late Akshya Mohanty alive in the minds of the people, Bamebari Manganese Mines Division, in association with ‘Akshya Mohanty Foundation’, organized a musical night on 11th December ’2011.
Dr. Umesh Chandra Jena, Deputy Director of Mines (Joda) joined as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the programme. Reputed singers from ‘Akshya Mohanty Foundation’, Mr. Bibhu Prasad Das, Mr. Prasant Muduli, Mr. Chitrabhanu Mohanty, Ms. Amrita Nayak, and Ms. Sudipta Das presented popular songs of Akshya Mohanty to a large audience including villagers from the nearby villages.

Odisha Chief Minister Shri Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the Dhamra Port, an all-weather deep port on the east coast of India, on 18th December 2011.
The Chief Minister unveiled a stone plaque on the port jetty and went around to see unloading operations from a 180000 capacity capsize vessel from Australia, which carried coal and had berthed at Dhamra Port.
Speaking on this occasion, the Chief Minister said that, Dhamra Port would act as a catalyst for Odisha's infrastructure, development, and economic prosperity. Referring to the long history of maritime activities in the area, he said that Dhamra has got back its past glory of the rich maritime trade with the functioning of the second port in the state. In the year 1962, the first port in Odisha was commissioned at Paradip, during the Government led by his late father Biju Patnaik.
On this occasion, Shri Santosh Kumar Mohapatra, CEO of DPCL, thanked the State Government, the district administration, and the people of Bhadrak District for their valuable contribution and support in making the Dhamra Port project a dream come true.
The port was commissioned in a record time and it has adopted all sophisticated and modern technology, which makes Dhamra Port one of the most cost-effective and efficient ports in the eastern India, he said.
The Dhamra Port is a 50: 50 joint venture project of L & T and Tata Steel. Construction of the port had started in 2007, and it commenced commercial operation in May 2011. Till date, more than 50 ships have berthed at the Dhamra Port jetty with import cargo of about 2.7 million tones, which include coal and limestone.
In the first phase, Dhamra Port has built two berths of 350 m long each and it is equipped for an achievable discharge rate of 60,000 MT per day and loading rate of 100,000 MT per day of dry bulk cargo. The port master plan provides for 13 berths, which would handle liquid, dry bulk, break bulk, and containerized cargo.

Ganjam is the 14th most vulnerable district in the country with regard to spread of HIV/AIDS. So, Tata Steel has endeavoured to create awareness on prevention of this disease. Further, to provide Care and Support Services for People Living with HIV and AIDS (PALHA), Tata Steel through its social arm Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) has set up the Community Care Centre in Ganjam (Bahadurpeta). This Centre has been functioning since 2006.
As measures in that direction, TSRDS organised a week-long HIV/AIDS awareness campaign from 1st December to 6th December, 2011. It also organised a signature campaign at Berhampur and Gopalpur on the ‘World AIDS Day.’ Senior citizens, students, youths participated in the signature campaign in large numbers. Dr Nirmal Chandra Mahanta, Head, R&R, Gopalpur Project of Tata Steel inaugurated both the programmes. Mr Tanmay Kar, Unit Head, TSRDS (Gopalpur), Mr Sanjib Kumar Sahu, Officer, Dr E Padmanav Rao, Medical Officer were among the dignitaries present on this occasion.
Apart from organising March past, a folk dance programme was organised on HIV / AIDS at Raghunathpur and Jagannathpur villages during the week. The folk dance touched the hearts of the villagers and they pledged their support to fight against HIV / AIDS.

A six-month long exercise to look for twenty best young astronomers in the state, under the Young Astronomer Talent Search programme organised by Tata Steel in collaboration with Pathani Samanta Planetarium came to an end on 13th December, 2011. Hon’ble Minister, Science & Technology and Textiles & Handloom, Government of Odisha, Smt. Usha Devi, felicitated the Top Twenty budding astronomers of Odisha in a grand function held at the Pathani Samanta Planetarium in Bhubaneswar.
Hailing from different districts of the State, these talents aspiring for space were awarded on the eve of the 176th anniversary of Mahamahopadhyay Chandrasekhar Singhsamant Harichandan Mahapatra, popularly known as Pathani Samanta on December 13, 2011. Speaking on the occasion, the Hon’ble Minister said, “This provides an opportunity to the students in rural and remote areas of the State to exhibit their talents and come to the forefront in the field of astronomy. This will also motivate and encourage the young minds of Odisha to become Scientists and Astronomers and keep the tradition going.”

With a view to popularise the excellent contributions of the legendary Pathani Samanta in the field of astronomy and to spot and encourage the young talents in the field of astronomy and space science among the school going children, Tata Steel, in collaboration with Pathani Samanta Planetarium (PSP) has been organising YATS. This is for the fifth time that Tata Steel is organising the event.
Aimed at empowering the youth, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), Gopalpur organised a four day youth empowerment programme at Tata Colony in the Luhajhar Gram Panchayat, Rangeilunda Block. The training programme was organised by Tata Steel in collaboration with Central Board for Workers Education, Berhampur from 15th November to 18th November. Mr A K Ojha, General Manager, Gopalpur Industrial Park (GIP), joined the training programme and deliberated on various income generating activities to increase their earnings.
Dr Nirmala Chandra Mahanta, Head, R & R, Tata Steel and Mr Ajit Mohapatra, Senior Manager, Tata Steel also joined the programme. Mr Badrinarayan Patra, Deputy Manager, District Industries Center (DIC), Mr Rajendra Padhi, Education Officer, Central Board for Workers’ Education, Mr Tanmay Kar, Unit Head, TSRDS and Mr Sanjib Kumar Sahu, Officer, TSRDS (Gopalpur) were among the dignitaries present on this occasion. Various avenues of income generation, youth empowerment, participation in village development work and technical training programmes were deliberated upon.
Aimed at encouraging the poor farmers to increase their income through kitchen gardens, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) distributed farm equipment and vegetable seeds among the poor farmers of the remote villages surrounding Joda in Keonjhar district of Odisha.
The equipment provided included fifty Hand Winnowers used for separating paddy from dust and twenty sprayers basically used for protection of crops. The beneficiaries who received Hand Winnowers belonged to Kotpali, Saradapankh, Bramhanidihi, Nayagarh, Jaganathpur, Nambira, Banspani, Mutuda, Lohanda and Shankarpur villages. Similarly, farmers from Mutuda, Lohanda, Banspani, Kotpali, Shankarpur, Nayagarh, Nayagarh, Nambira and Saradapankh villages were provided with Sprayers.
Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), Joda provided 50% of the cost of the equipments with the remaining 50% being borne by the beneficiaries. The farmers were provided cauliflower, brinjal, cabbage, radish, tomato, and bean seeds among others. TSRDS targets to cover about 20 acres of land under kitchen cultivation.
TRL Krosaki Refractories Ltd. located in Belpahar in Jharsuguda district in Odisha, has started a programme called “Upaj” under its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. The programme seeks to provide irrigation facilities to the villagers in and around Belpahar. Under the programme, irrigation facilities were provided in the Bhutia Village in Lakhanpur Block recently.
It is targeted to irrigate 120 acres of land, which would benefit 60 families including 40 SC & ST families of the village. The project consists of a 500 ft deep bore well, a 20 HP pump-house and other fittings. It was completed at a cost of Rs. 5.7 Lakhs.
This has enabled the villagers to have a second and third crop of Paddy, Mustard, Moong, Groundnut and vegetables. Mr Anup Kumar Sai, Hon’ble M.L.A, Brajarajnagar along with Dr Arup Kumar Chattopadhyay, Managing Director of TRL Krosaki, inaugurated the facility, in the presence of the villagers.
It may be noted, the main source of income for Bhutia villagers is agriculture. Deprived of any assured irrigation facility, they had approached the company. Meanwhile, the villagers have adopted Community Farming, which benefits all farmers including marginal and landless.
To create awareness among the employees, workers and the general public on various safety aspects, Khandbond Iron Mine (KIM) of Tata Steel celebrated the 49th Annual Mines Safety Week on 15th November’2011. The publicity & propaganda function was held on the Joda Central Organisation premises. Mr PK Kundu, Deputy Director, Mines Safety (Chainbasa Region) joined as Chief Guest and inaugurated the programme.

The dignitaries visited the stalls put up on this occasion by various departments of KIM. Then stalls displayed model machineries and instruments, which are used for safety. The artists from Joda area participated in the cultural programme.
Dr. Neeraj Dhingra, Deputy Director General of National AIDS Control Programme visited Sukinda on 14th & 15th November 2011. Dr. S K Swain, Team Leader, Strategic Planning and Mr Shashikanta Mohapatra, Project Officer, Odisha State AIDS Control Society accompanied him.
The visit aimed at gaining an idea about the working of the Targeted Intervention Project on HIV/AIDS with specific focus on Integrated Counseling and Testing Center. The Centre is running under Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) mode. It also intended to explore collaborative efforts with Tata Steel, the pioneer Company in taking up new initiatives to control HIV/AIDS.
During the visit, Dr Dhingra interacted with the people’s representatives and explored the possibility of integrating HIV with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The team had informal discussions with doctors of the SCM Hospital to ensure adoption of Universal Precaution measures by all physicians and paramedics while treating HIV/AIDS patients.
Targeted Intervention (TI) team of Sukinda is working on prevention of sexually transmitted infections, prevention of HIV/AIDS. Similarly, it is providing care and support to those truck drivers/helpers and female sex workers who are living with HIV/AIDS. Besides, health camps are being conducted in all hot spots, blood donation camps and outdoor visibility campaign through wall paintings, hanging kiosks, leaflets and billboards etc.
To create awareness among mothers about the importance of good health for the children and to encourage those who have taken proper care of their kids, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) organised a healthy baby competition at Bamnipal on 29th October, 2011.
About 40 children, from about 20 nearby villages in the age group of 1 to 2 years participated in the competition. The health of the children was judged on parameters like complete immunization, weight, illness, and food habits among others. The best three among them were given prizes.
It was found that maximum numbers of children were under weight. In this context, Ms Chandana Mishra, ICDS supervisor explained that feeding habits are mainly responsible for the prevalence of underweight among the children.

Joda East Iron Mine of Tata Steel bagged four prizes in the group events and five prizes in the individual events of the 49th Mines Safety Week Celebration. The event was held on 20th November at Mahotsab Ground in Barbil. The mine bagged the first prize for the best electrical safety & mine illumination and for the best innovation in protection platform in the High Mast Illumination Tower. Similarly, it was given away the second prize for Best General Working and First-Aid Competition.
In the individual event, Sri Deepak Nag of JEIM won the 1st prize in slogan competition. While Mr Manoj Sanwasi won the second prize in Electrical Trade Test, Sri KC Nayak bagged the second prize in Dumper Operator Trade Test. Sri Sule Kindo won the second prize in Poster Competition. All the three prizes in the accident free worker category were bagged by Sri Goura Polai (1st), Sri Dillip Kumar Gupta (2nd) and Sri Sanatan Tiriya (3rd) of JEIM.
Manganese Mines of Tata Steel (Joda) also won four prizes in this event. Joda West Manganese Mines bagged the first prize in the publicity and propaganda and Bamebari Manganese Mines bagged the first prize for overall performance. While Malda Manganese Mines won the first prize for best vocational training, Joda West Manganese Mines bagged the second prize in the overall performance category.
The prizes were given away during the concluding day function of the Safety Week Celebration held at Barbil. Mr Anup Biswas, Deputy DGMS, Ranchi joined as the Chief Guest on this occasion.
Aimed at improving the agricultural practices through the use of technical knowledge and to improve the economic status of farmers through vegetable farming, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) organised a vegetable training programme for the farmers in Sukinda.
Mr Susant Kumar Mishra, Chief (Mining), Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) inaugurated the two days’ training programme organised at the Kalarangi High School on 11th -12th November 2011. More than 50 women farmers from Ransol, Vimtangar, Kalarangi, Kakudia, Mahulkhal, Kushumundia and other periphery villages joined the training programme.
Interestingly, the programme incorporated both the 'class room' and 'on-the-field’ training components. Mr Gouranga Swain, horticulturist and Prof. Mihir Sahoo, Plant Protection Officer, Ghatgaon Block familiarised the farmers with various aspects of vegetable cultivation that have become profitable nowadays.

It was celebrated by Joda East Iron Mine (JEIM) of Tata Steel at Joda East Children’s Park under Joda municipality. Mr. M Tandi, Director, Mine Safety (DGMS of Chainbasa region) joined as Chief Guest and inaugurated the programme.

Mr Tandi underscored the importance of awareness to minimise all kinds of hazards in mining areas as well as in our daily life. While the bad condition of roads, busy traffic, extensive use of unskilled workers in mining operations, increasing use of alcohol and other intoxicants in the workplace and illegal mining can cause accidents, awareness can help minimize it.

With a view to control malaria in Gopalpur area, Tata Steel distributed medicated mosquito nets among the villagers of Sitalapalli of Luhajhar Gram Panchayat recently. Seven hundred and twenty-five medicated mosquito nets were distributed among the villagers.
Mr A K Ojha, General Manager, (Gopalpur Industrial Park), Mr Tirupati Pradhan, President, Sitalapalli Village Committee, other village committee members and villagers participated in the programme.
Earlier, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) distributed study materials among the students of Madhusudan High School located in Sindhigaon village of the Tata Rehabilitation Colony of Luhajhar Gram Panchayat. Sixty-one students of Madhusudan High School (reading in class-10) were provided with ‘Test Papers and Practice Books’.

A two member official delegation from the Government of Mozambique comprising of Mr. Luis Abrto Mahoque, Senior Officer (Public Administration), Directorate of Planning & Development, and Mr NoaInacio, Technician (Department of Planning and Development) visited OMQ Division of Tata Steel.
The team interacted with cross section of people including Mr Dillip Nayak (Councillor, Ward. No.2, Joda Municipality) and discussed various development initiatives taken by Tata Steel through the Tata Steel Rural Development Society.
They were apprised about the initiatives taken up by Tata Steel like construction of roads, KirtanMandap, Overhead tank for supply of pure drinking water among others.The team also witnessed various Income Generation activities by Self Help Groups (SHGs) like fish farms, leaf plate making etc. Mr. Sanjeev Mohapatra, Unit Head, TSRDS guided the team. Under the guidance of Mr G V Satyanarayan, Senior Manager (Operations), Joda East Iron Mine, the team observed the mining activities.
They also interacted with Mr R R Satapathy (Chief, Joda) & Mr Anurag Dixit (Chief, Khandbond Iron Mine). In Noamundi, the team met Mr. Rajiv Singhal (EIC, FAMD) and Mr D B Sundara Ramam (GM, OMQ). The next day, the team visited a health camp organised by TSRDS at Sargitolia under Joda municipality and a BPO training centre at Tata Sponge.
To create a sustainable environment in and around its operational areas has been one of the priorities of Tata Steel. The environmental responsibilities of the steel major are driven by the commitment to preserve the environment.
In line with this policy, Tata Steel has launched a plantation programme in the Kalinganagar area in Jajpur district of Odisha where the company is setting up a 6 million tonne integrated steel project.
As part of this programme, Odisha project of Tata Steel planted fruit bearing and other saplings in Alekhapur U P School & Jemadeipur U P School of Gobardhanpur Gram Panchayat under Danagadi Block in Jajpur district.

As part of the programme, Tata Steel Rural Development Society, Joda and Malda Manganese Mine organised a 45 days driving training for 40 local youths including 5 girls. After successful completion of training these youths were provided driving license in a function held recently.
Mr Parikshita Sethi, Block Development Officer, Koira Block joined as Chief Guest and distributed driving license to all the youths.

As part of its initiative to extend better health care to the people living in its operational areas, Tata Steel organised a health camp at Badakusathali Gram Panchayat of Rangeilunda block on 2nd November, 2011. More than 240 villagers from nearby villages availed free health checkup facility in the camp.
Dr. Gopal Krushna Behera, Dr. K. T. Subudhi and Dr. E. Padmanav Rao attended the health camp and treated the villagers. Mr Tanmay Kar, Unit Head of TSRDS, Gopalpur and Mr Sanjib Kumar Sahu, Officer, TSRDS were among the dignitaries present on this occasion.
The villagers living in the neighbourhood of Gopalpur are also prone to malaria. So, for controlling malaria, the Gopalpur unit of TSRDS also distributed medicated mosquito nets in the area. More than 700 medicated mosquito nets were distributed among 300 families in the area.
Mr A. K. Ojha, General Manager, Gopalpur Industrial Park (GIP) inaugurated the health camp and medicated mosquito net distribution programme. Former MLA and Social Worker, Mr Viswanath Sahu also joined as a guest.
Aimed at equipping the technical managers to find and select potential talents as per the knowledge database and culture of the organization, Odisha project of Tata Steel organised a workshop on interviewing skills on 3rd-4th November, 2011. The workshop was organised envisioning bulk recruitments happening in the near future to address the manpower requirements of Odisha project.
All the Heads and Chiefs of the respective departments participated in the workshop. Mr Sanjay Roy Chowdhury, Managing Director of Gray Matters Consulting Pvt. Ltd. joined as the key trainer of the workshop. Prior to this, Mr. Sanjay Roy Chowdhury was the Associate Director, Ernst & Young, heading Eastern India and SAARC operations. The programme was highly effective with the participants gaining good learning experience.
Tata Steel is focused on improving the health status of villagers living in and around its operational areas. As part of this initiative, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), Joda in association with Tata Steel Hospital, Joda and Malda Manganese mines division of Tata Steel organised two mega health camps in Koira block of Sundargarh district in Odisha.
While the mega health camp was organized at Panposia village under Patmunda Gram Panchayat on 3rd November, 2011, it was organized at Malda village under Malda Gram Panchayat in Koira block on the next day. A team of six doctors headed by Dr A K Roy, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Tata Steel Hospital (Joda) and six paramedical staff from TSRDS examined the patients. Free medicines were also distributed to all the patients.
Sri Sriram Munda, Sarpanch, Patmunda Gram Panchayat inaugurated the camp organised at Panposia. About 216 patients from the nearby villages including Panposia, Ranisal, Sargigarh, Patamunda, Amliam, Sanpatuli, Betajhari & Gamharinali availed the free services of the camp. Mr Parikshita Sethi, B.D.O, Koira Block, inaugurated the camp organised at Malda. About 370 patients from the nearby villages like Malda, Kalmong, Giddai, Joripada, Katesahi, Sagesahi, Kanhusahi, Kakarpani, Mourihating, Kenaveta, Ganua, Ohraghat, Deoghar, and Chormalda attended the Health Camp at Malda.

To improve the Quality of Life (QoL) of the people living in and around its areas of operations, Tata Steel has been taking several measures. Prevention of diseases like Malaria has been accorded priority as it may have a debilitating impact on the people suffering from it. As measures in that direction, the Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) distributed mosquito nets in some villages of Joda block of Keonjhar district of Odisha. This includes Khandbond, Guruda and Thakurani villages.
On 30th October’2011, TSRDS in association with the Khondbond Iron Mine (KIM) distributed mosquito nets among the poor people of the Khandbond village under Joda block under its Malaria Eradication Programme (MEP). Continuing the initiative, TSRDS distributed 400 mosquito nets in different hamlets of Guruda village under Balda Gram Panchayat of Joda block on 31st October; 2011. It also distributed 320 mosquito nets in Thakurani village under Palasa Gram Panchayat of Joda block on 1st November, 2011.
The TSRDS initiative has come in for appreciation from the local people, as the move will benefit the poor people living in those villages.
Tata Steel has been endeavouring to improve the Quality of Life (QoL) of the people living in and around its areas of operations. As part of this community centric initiative, Tata Steel donated bed sheets and mosquito nets among the residents of Mankadia Basti located near the Tata Steel colony in Sukinda.
Mr Bhabani Rath, Manager (Store) and Dr Jayant Kumar Tripathy of Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) distributed bed sheets and mosquito nets among the people. The residents of this basti are the ethnic tribes of the area and are extremely poor. Tata Steel, on a number of occasions, has come to the assistance of these people by providing drinking water, medical facilities and educational facilities among others.
It distributed 30 mosquito nets and 60 bed sheets to the residents of this basti on 18th October, 2011. The initiative is expected to help these people improve the quality of life to some extent and bring Tata Steel closer to the community. Members of the local Truck Owners’ Association and representatives of media were present on this occasion.
In an attempt to create awareness on the need for blood donation and encourage the donors to use this opportunity to be more humane, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) organised a blood donation camp in Sukinda. The camp was organised jointly with the local Truck Owners' Association and a leading Odia daily, SAMBAD in collaboration with the Red Cross Blood Bank of Jajpur District.
About 59 units of blood were collected in the camp. Mr Raisen Murmu, Inspector in Charge (IIC), Kaliapani Police Station was the first person to donate blood in the camp. Mr Rabi Narayan Kar, reporter of Sambad newspaper and representative of Ama Odisha, extended all support for the camp.
Dr Jayant Tripathy, Senior Medical Officer, TSRDS and Mr S N Nanda coordinated conduct of the camp. The staff of TSRDS, Red Cross and volunteers of the Truck Owners’ Association contributed to the holding of the camp. Dr Deepak Kumar Prusty, Chief District Medical Officer, Jajpur and his Blood Bank Team contributed their best to the successful conduct of the blood donation camp.
Aimed at creating awareness on safety among the school going students, Tata Steel organised a Health and Safety training at the Mahatma Gandhi Technical Institute, Dhabalgiri (Jajpur road) in the district of Jajpur in Odisha. Though a number of industries have come up in the area, the level of safety awareness was quite low. In this context, Tata Steel has been organising health and safety training in association with various technical institutions in the area.
Mr. SC Ramchandra, a senior official of Tata Steel imparted training to more than 200 students on various aspects of day-to-day safety. He emphasized on the safe use of machines, safe driving on roads and safety in the day-to-day life. The response of the students was encouraging with the students promising to use this training in their practical life.
Mr Jayanta Kumar Padhi, Senior Manager, Corporate Affairs, and Mr Sanjib Samanta Ray, Managing Director, Mahatma Gandhi Technical Institute, also participated in the training programme. Earlier, Tata Steel organised safety awareness programmes at Nilachal ITI, Kalinga Institute of Engineering & Technology, Kalinganagar Polytechnic, Manorama ITC, and Biju Pattnaik ITC.
As a part of Tata Steel’s strategy that benefits the community at large, the Company continually assesses the needs of the community and undertakes initiatives that are in line with its priority. In this context, as part of its periphery development activities, the Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP), Bamnipal laid the foundation stone for a Kalyan Mandap at Tomka village in Dangadi block of Jajpur district in Odisha.
Hon’ble Minister For Finance And Public Enterprises, Government of Odisha, Sri Prafulla Chandra Ghadai laid the foundation stone for the Kalyan Mandap on 2nd October, 2011. A large number of people from the neighbouring villages were present on this occasion. The construction of the Kalyan Mandap is being taken up at an estimated expenditure of Rs 27 lakhs. It will have an area of 2682 sq. ft.
Sri Ghadai appreciated Ferro Alloys Plant’s initiatives to improve the quality of life of the people in Danagadi (Jajpur district), Ghasipura and Harichandanpur blocks (Keonjhar district). He also urged the people to thank Tata Steel for its initiatives to develop the periphery areas.
Mr. G P Sahu, Head, FAP, Bamnipal and Mr Ashok Kumar Ghosh Head (Administration), FAMD addressed the gathering and expressed their desire to serve the community to improve their quality of life. Mr B P Mishra, Senior Manager (Engg & Civil), Mr Inderasan Singh, Asst. Manager and Mr G C Pradhan of TSRDS were present on this occasion. The construction of the Kalyan Mandap is targeted to be completed in five months.

As a measure in that direction, Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) of Tata Steel organised a mega health camp at the Gram Panchayat High School, Kalarangi, Ransol Gram Panchayat on 16th October, 2011.
M/s Utkal Polyclinic, of Bhubaneswar headed by Dr B N Mohapatra along with ten specialists in the field of Gynecology, Orthopedics, medicine, Child Specialist, ENT, Pathology and radiology treated the patients from morning to evening.
In all, 789 patients including 515 females availed the benefit of this health camp. Free medication and investigation were also provided to the patients. Mrs Sushila Bindhani, Vice Chairman and Sri Narendra Dash, Sarpanch, Ransol Gram Panchayat inaugurated the health camp.
Senior officials of Tata Steel also supervised the camp operations and encouraged the volunteers. Prominent among them were Mr. Biraja Mishra, Senior Manager, Mr. Haridrumat Behera, Senior Manager, Mr. R C Mallik, Senior Manager, Mr. Ashok Ghosh, Head (Admn) and Mr Satyanarayan Nanda, Unit Head, TSRDS.
Dr. Satya Niwas, Head of Tata Steel Hospital, Sukinda and his team extended all support for the conduct of the camp. The patients requiring further treatment were referred to the Tata Steel Hospital.
The staff of TRSDS along with the Targeted Intervention (TI) project team worked round the clock to make the camp successful. Dr Jayant Tripathy, Senior Medical Officer, TSRDS coordinated the conduct of the mega health camp. This was the fourth mega health camp oraganised by SCM in the area.
Three Small Group Activity (SGA) teams from OMQ (Joda) of Tata Steel were awarded at the Chapter Convention on Quality Concepts held at Rourkela on 23rd and 24th September, 2011. It was organised by QCFI, Rourkela Chapter.
While the secondary crusher and Unbrako SGA team of Joda East Iron Mine (JEIM) won gold awards, Surakshit SGA of the equipment and mining division won the silver award. Besides, the secondary crusher (processing plant of JEIM) bagged a special quiz award for the knowledge test on quality concepts.
In all, 64 circles from 18 organisations participated in the event. The participating companies included Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP), Bolani Ore Mines; NSPCL; NTPC-Korba; OCL India; OCL Steel, Nalco, Ferro Alloys and Minerals Division (FAMD) of Tata Steel (Sukinda), Tata Steel OMQ (Joda) Hindalco, Sarda mines, TRL Krosaki, NINL, PPL, TPC-Jamshedpur and NTPC-Unchahar among others.
Essay writing, slogan & poem competitions were held in Odia, Hindi and English. Besides, a knowledge test on QC related concepts in English, was conducted. The teams made case studies presentations on QC (57), QIT (04) & Kaizen (03).
Mr S Shekar, Executive Director (Works), Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) and chapter Chairman, joined as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the programme. Mr Shekar exhorted the representatives of member industries and the QC members present to make good use of this forum and spread various quality concepts.
Setting a trend, the Accounts Department of Ferro Alloys & Mineral Division (FA&MD) of Tata Steel has started settling the Provident Fund (PF) accounts of the superannuating employee on the day of their separation.
The initiative was started a couple of months back with the latest beneficiary being Sri Pitabas Pradhan, Senior Time Keeper. Sri Pradhan, after working for 38 years in Tata Steel, retired on 30th September 2011.
The Accounts department and time office staff worked in a systematic manner to make the final PF amount cheque ready by the day retirement.
Mr Bidyut Ghosh, Head (HR/IR) & Mr BK Sahu, President, SCM Workers' Union handed over the final PF cheque to him on 30th September, 2011 at 5 PM.
Departmental employees and officers were present during the handing over of the cheque. All the employees and officers present on this occasion wished him a happy retired life. This is for the third month that FAMD Accounts is settling PF to superannuating employee on the day of separation.
Acknowledging the contributions made by two retiring employees, Manganese Mines of Tata Steel bid farewell to them on 30th September, 2011. The employees given farewell were Sri J Khan, Sr. Foreman and Sri C D Panda, Sr Mining Mate.
A function was organised on this occasion to bid farewell to both the employees. While Sri Khan served the Company for 37 years, Mr Panda served 28 years.
Sri Asit Nayak, Senior Manager, Bamebari Manganese Mines gave away token gifts to both the employees. The dignitaries present on this occasion appreciated the good work done by them and their long association with the Company. They wished good health & happy life post-retirement.

In yet another initiative, to ensure the safety of contract workers and comply with the statutory requirements under the Mines Rule 1955 and Mines Act 1952, the Manganese Group of Mines (MGMs) of Tata Steel located in Joda in Keonjhar district of Odisha organised a medical camp for the contract workers.
The health conditions of about 900 contract workers were examined in the camp organised from 19th September to 28th September 2011 at Bichakundi near Joda. The initiative was taken to ensure that only healthy & fit contract workers are deployed in mines operated by Tata Steel.
The medical examination was conducted by the Mobile Occupational Health unit of the Centre for Environment and Occupational Health, a unit of Utkal Polyclinic, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. A team of 15 doctors led by Dr. B. N. Mohapatra examined all the contract employees.

The love of fellow human and a desire to share something of his own is what singles out a blood donor from the others. Since emergencies occur every minute, for each patient requiring blood, it is an emergency. The patients could have set back if blood is not available.
In this context, to encourage the habit of blood donation among the people, Mines Division of Tata Steel organised a blood donation camp at the Tata Steel Hospital, Joda on 9th October, 2011. The blood donation camp organized in association with Rotary Club, Joda, was Inaugurated by Mr Umesh Chandra Jena, Deputy Director of Mines (DDM), Joda.
In total, 87 bottles of blood were collected during the camp. It was given to the Blood Bank, Keonjhar for providing necessary support to the police and para-military personnel who are injured or in need of blood during their engagements in the law and order duty in the district.

Activities of children, such as playing with sand, walking barefoot, eating unwashed fruits and biting their fingernails, promote the proliferation of worms in their system, which needs to be flushed out periodically.
In yet another initiative to reach out to the children in and around Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM), Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) organised a one-day deworming camp at the Chirgunia Primary School.
Since awareness is vital for checking this menance, the initiative aimed at creating awareness on the issue among the school children. More than 76 school children including kids from the pre-school Anganwadi Centres benefited from the camp.
TSRDS is organizing such events in the area to create health awareness among the people living in the nearby areas including the school children.
Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM) of Ferro Alloys & Minerals Division (FAMD) engrossed in a month long Kate Purty Invitational Inter-village Knock out Football Tournament in September, 2011.
The tournament which is an annual event, started from 7th September and culminated with the final match held on 27th September, 2011. This year’s tournament evoked good response with the participation of 40 teams from the districts of Jajpur, Keonjhar & Dhenkanal.
All the teams were placed in two groups & matches were played on knock-out basis at the Central Play Ground, Sukinda. Bhalutangar & Birsa Nagar from Group "A" and Kuhika & Chingudipal from Group "B" entered the Semi-finals. The Final match was played between Bhalutangar & Kuhika on 27th September, 2011.
The day of the finals was sunny which attracted about four thousand spectators & enthusiasts from far & near areas. The final match was closely contested and was decided by a Sudden Death method with Bhalutangar emerging as winner with one goal to nil.

Four small group activity teams from Ferro Alloys & Mineral Division (FAMD) brought laurels in the 19th Chapter Convention of Quality Circles (CCQC) held on 23rd & 24th Sep'11 at Rourkela. The teams are Six Sigma, Sanjibani, Pitcrane-2 and Faraday.
While Six Sigma (TPM circle from Sukinda Chromite Mine’s maintenance department) won the Gold medal, Sanjibani (QC circle from SCM Hospital) and Pitcrane-2 (TPM circle from FAP Joda) won Gold medals, Faraday (TPM circle from SCM, Chrome Ore Beneficiation Plant (COBP) won Silver Medal.
In all, sixty-five Quality Circles from Eastern India participated in the support services and manufacturing category in the 19th CCQC competition. It was for the first time that the Sanjivani Quality Circle, the lady team from FAMD participated in the CCQC and won a Gold medal.
Sanjibani Quality Circle is facilitated by Dr. Nivedita Nanda and led by Ms. Nandita Pattnaik. It has Ms Laxmipriya Mishra, Ms Tersa Barla, Ms Sailabala Mishra, Ms Pankajni Sahoo, and Ms Basabti Bose as members. FAMD has always been a leader in the SGA activities in Tata Steel and SGA teams.
Sports being a passion in Tata Steel, the Company always strives to upgrade sports infrastructure and support young talent in its existing areas of operations as well as in the upcoming project areas.
As part of this initiative, Manganese Mines of Tata Steel organised the Annual Rural knock-out football tournament from 23rd September to 25th September, 2011 at Bamebari.
In all, 24 teams from nearby villages participated in the tournament, which was played at the Bamebari Camp playground. Mr. Manikanta Naik, Head, Manganese Group of Mines inaugurated the tournament.
The final match was played between Balda Youth Club & Joribar Youth Club on 25th September, 2011 with Balda Youth Club emerging as the Champion. Mr. Nayak gave away the Champion's Trophy to Balda Youth Club. Sri Indramani Purty, the local Sarpanch awarded the runners’ up trophy.

ASPIRE includes improvement tools like Suggestion Management, Six Sigma, Total Productivity Management (TPM), Knowledge Management (KM) among others.
In this context, to boost the morale of the employees and encourage them to give more suggestions, a suggestion award function was organized by Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP), Joda on 30th September 2011. In this session, 40 suggestions were awarded and 60 suggestions were accepted for implementation. The officers of the FAP and the office bearers of the Workers’ Union were present on this occasion.
Tata Relief Committee (TRC), formed by Tata Steel and other Tata Group companies, has come to the assistance of the flood-affected people of Odisha.
More than 50,000 families spread over three districts of the State have been covered by the relief operations of TRC. This includes the worst affected Badachana and Bari blocks in Jajpur district and Kanasa block in Puri district of Odisha.
Two spells of floods hit the coastal and northern districts like Keonjhar in September this year following heavy rain both in the upper and lower catchment areas of River Mahanadi, Budhabalanga and Baitarani among others.
The floods triggered panic and caused extensive damage in 19 districts of the state including Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Keonjahr and Puri, forcing thousands of people flee their homes to take shelter in the highlands.
In the first phase, dry food, drinking water pouches, candles and match boxes are being distributed to the flood-affected people in the inundated areas. The state witnessed two spells of flood in the month of September, which affected a large population.
Apart from undertaking relief operations for the flood ravaged people in Jajpur and Puri districts, TRC and Tata Steel undertook the distribution of relief in Keonjhar district of Odisha.
In Joda TSRDS in association with Tata Steel Hospital organised a number of free health check up camps at different locations of Joda municipal area to control the spread of post-flood diseases. Specialist doctors from Tata Steel Hospital, Joda Dr. AK Roy (Dy. Chief Medical Officer), Dr. Satyabrata Guru (Medicine specialist), Dr. Sourav Sekhar (Registrar, Ophthalmology), Dr. Rajendra Prasad (TSRDS doctor) examined the patients.
While camps were organised at Bachu Hatting, Uli Hatting, Majhi Hatting & Hanuman Hatting on 24th September, camps were organised at Muslim Hatting, Jhumpudi Hatting, AjadBasti, Amba Bagan, Mukherjee Hatting, Bachu Hatting, Uli Hatting, Ramjan Hatting the next day.
Medicines were distributed free of costs to all the patients by TSRDS. Patients were examined for diseases related to Skin, ENT, Paediatric, T.B, Gynaecology, Headache, Blood Pressure, Malaria, Diarrhoea by the doctors.
Besides, Joda unit of the Mahila Samiti distributed clothes to the flash flood devastated families of Munda Bustee. It distributed 300 clothes to more than 100 families who were in dire need of clothing. Mrs. Raksha Dixit, President and Mrs. Ruby Sinha, Vice-President of MahilaSamiti led the team. TSRDS unit of Joda facilitated the distribution of clothes to the affected people.
Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) is focused on improving the health status of the villagers within its operational area. As measures in that direction, it organised a health check-up camp for the students of the Saraswati Sishu Vidya Mandir located at the Tata Steel campus in Sukinda.
The school is catering to the needs of Odia medium students of Chrome valley and most of the students belong to the nearby community. The health check-up of 135 students were conducted by Dr. Rajesh Kumar, Pediatric specialist of Tata Steel’s Sukinda Chromite Mines Hospital and Dr Jayanta Tripathy, Senior Medical Officer of TSRDS, Sukinda. The students were also provided free medicines.
Providing gainful employment for the local youths in Sukinda area has remained an area of concern. So, to improve the economic status of these youths, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) is promoting both individual and group entrepreneurship through skill upgradation in various trades. Since the pro-active vocational training enhances the employability of the unskilled village youth and makes them self-reliant, TSRDS has been pursuing such initiatives.
As a measure in that direction, Site Safety Supervisor training was launched for 21 local youths on 12th September, 2011 in Sukinda. It was organized in Vocational Training Centre (VTC) of Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM). Interestingly, Sukinda happens to be the first out location to launch such training.
TSRDS-Sukinda, Safety Department and Urban Services Department of Tata Steel were instrumental in framing this six week session, replete with hands-on experiences from mine and Chrome Ore Beneficiation (COB) plant.
Employees from safety & ergonomics, COB, fire & security, mechanical, electrical and maintenance departments are providing free training in the programme.
After successful completion of the training, various registered vendors of Tata Steel and others would absorb them. The first batch training starting from 12th September 2011 would continue till November 2011. This model will not only provide livelihoods to the community but also help in implementation o fDuPont safety standards and encourage employee volunteerism.
Mr Satya Narayan Nanda, Manager, Corporate Sustainability Services (CSS), Sukinda attended a training cum workshop on Sustainability Report Writing held in New Delhi on 16th & 17th September, 2011. During the workshop, Mr Nanda had the opportunity to talk to Nobel laureate Mr R K Pachauri for about 3 minutes.
During the discussion, Mr Pachauri appreciated Tata Steel for the climate change initiatives. Tata Steel is much ahead of other corporates in India in the field of climate change and global warming, he is reported to have remarked. The programme attended by the representatives from about 30 corporate houses, provided a true learning environment for the participants.
Joda area in Keonjhar district of Odisha received incessant rainfall on 22nd and 23rd September, 2011. Consequently, water level in the river Sona surged leading to flash flood in the adjoining areas. The flood inundated the bustees and rendered hundreds of families homeless. Besides, two bridges on Sona located in Joda area breached, disrupting traffic movement in the area. Joda also remained cut off from other parts of Odisha and Jharkhand.
During this period of distress, Tata Steel assisted the flood-affected families in the area. Dry food items like chuda, gur, biscuits, salt, water pouches, candles & match boxes were distributed amongst the flood affected families. Bleaching powder was used to disinfect the water sources. Anti-mosquito and insect repellent gas also was sprayed to prevent malaria in the post-flood situation.
The Ambulance & Mobile Medical Vans of Tata Steel were pressed into service for providing emergency health services in the affected areas. The areas where relief assistance was provided includes Laxmi ground, Hanuman temple, Ulia hutting, Bacchu hutting, Muslim market, Tarini market, Azad bustee, Mukherjee hutting, Majhi hutting, Jhupdi hutting, Ambagaon, Mutunda and Dipu hutting. To provide safe drinking water to the bustee people, water tankers were pressed into service.
Employees of Tata Steel, Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP), OMQ and Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) extended all help for smooth relief operations. Tata Relief Committee immediately provided 1500 polythene sheets, 5000 packets of biscuits and 2000 packets of candles with match boxes for the flood affected.
Similarly, two breached bridges were repaired and cleared for traffic in a short period of time. This helped in the restoration of connectivity of Joda with other parts of the State. Following the request of the district administration of Keonjhar, 50 quintals of rice were also provided for relief operations in the Anandapur sub-division of Keonjhar district. The relief initiatives by Tata Steel have come in for appreciation from the district administration.
At Tata Steel, where the primary purpose of business is to improve the quality of life of people, all community-centric initiatives are focused on empowering stakeholders at the grassroots level and ensuring a better tomorrow for them.
As part of this community centric initiative, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), Gopalpur donated desks and benches to Chamakhandi High School. More than 30 pairs of desks and benches were provided to the school.
Sri Simanchala Sahu, Sarpanch of Chamakhandi Gram Panchayat, Sri Satyanarayan Reddy, social worker, Sri Janardan Reddy, President of the school managing committee, Sri Girija Prasad Reddy, member of Zilla Parishad, Mr Padmacharan Sahu, Panchayat Samiti member, Kashinath Reddy, President of the Village Committee joined the bench and desk distribution programme.
Mr Upendra Kumar Mohanty, Headmaster of Chamakhandi High School and other teachers appreciated Tata Steel’s effort to improve educational infrastructure in the area. Mr Binod Kumar, Senior Manager, Mr Tanmay Kar, Unit Head of TSRDS and Mr Sanjib Sahu, officer of TSRDS were among the dignitaries present on this occasion.
The Zonal round competition of Young Astronomers Talent Search (YATS), organized by Tata Steel, in collaboration with Pathani Samanta Planetarium (PSP), was held at the Pathani Samanta Planetarium (PSP), Bhubaneswar on 25th September, 2011.
Seventy students hailing from six districts of Odisha like Cuttack, Khurda, Puri, Angul, Jagatsinghpur and Dhenkanal participated in the competition. The participants presented their models on “My Dream Spacecraft”, the topic chosen for this year’s competition.
The talent search competition is being organized by the steel major from 2007 to popularize the excellent contributions of the legendary Pathani Samanta in the field of astronomy and to spot and encourage the young talents in the field of astronomy and space science among the school going children.
More than 300 students participated in the preliminary round competition of Tata Steel Inter-School Quiz - 2011. The competition seeks to provide an opportunity for the youngsters to prove their mettle in the battle of knowledge.
Besides, 76 students participated in the preliminary round of Tata Steel Inter-School Art Competition. The initiative aims at providing an impetus to the passion and creativity, particularly at the grassroots level.
Mrs Tripti Roy, Ethics Counselor, Tata Steel, visited Tata Steel’s Odisha project office at Duburiin Jajpur district of Odisha on 8th Sept. 2011. She joined the employees in an interactive session on different clauses of the Tata Code of Conduct and on the importance of ethics in business. The officers of Odisha Project Team accorded Mrs. Roy a warm welcome.
During her visit to Odisha, she interacted with officers at Bhubaneswar, and Ferro Alloys & Mineral Division (FAMD), Sukinda. All queries raised by the employees and officers were addressed by Mrs Roy. Discussions were centered on topics like gift policy, ethical behavior, and conflict of interests, sexual harassment policy and concurrent employment, among others.
The initiative aims at apprising the employees about various clauses of the Tata Code of Conduct, which has been highly appreciated by the employees. Mr PK Ghose, Chief of Odisha Project, Mr DN Jha Chief (Coke, Sinter & Iron) and other officials were present on this occasion.
Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), in collaboration with Tata Steel Sports Department, Jamshedpur organised the Rural Cross Country Race – 2011 on 10th September, 2011. About 268 passionate local boys and girls hailing from 15 villages of Jajpur and Dhenkanal districts participated in the race organised at Sukinda Chromite Mine (SCM).
The cross-country race was organised in under-15 and above-15 years categories. The Sukinda unit of TSRDS mobilized the school students and local youths to take part in the race. Mrs Bhagabati Mohanta, member of Zilla Parisad, Mr Narendra Das, Sarpanch, Ransol, Mr Sarat Ch. Naik, Sarpanch, Kankadpal, Mr AK Ghosh, Head (Admn.), SCM and Mr SSN Xalxo were among the dignitaries present on this occasion.
Mr Avinash Kumar, Manager (Sports), Jamshedpur, Mr Birdhan Marandi, Area Officer, Urban Services, Tata Steel (Jamshedpur) actively organised the event. Mr SSN Xalxo, Dr. Jayant Tripathy, Mr Gopal Ghosh, Mr SK Pattanaik, Mr Arvind Neogi, Mr NB Rana, Mr Pradeep Mansingh, Ms Amarjeet Kar, Mr SK Mohanty and volunteers from TSRDS actively participated in the event.
A flood almost similar in intensity to the calamity in 2008, hit coastal areas in Odisha in September this year following heavy rains both in upper and lower catchment areas of River Mahanadi. The flood triggered panic and caused extensive damages in 19 districts of the state including Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur and Puri, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes to take shelter on the high lands. More than 30 lakh people were marooned and the floods claimed 33 lives in the state.
During this time of natural disasters, the flood affected people in Odisha were provided relief by the Tata Relief Committee (TRC), formed by Tata Steel and other Tata Group companies based in Jamshedpur to help people during major disasters. TRC, in collaboration with the district administration, provided relief operations in various flood-affected areas of Jajpur and Puri districts.
In the first phase, food packets, drinking water packets and candles were distributed to the flood-affected people in the inundated areas. Areas where Tata relief was distributed included Badachana, Kantia, Sarabara, Bhodua, Kumbuka, Ratalanga, Badaghunguri, Radhageipur in Jajpur district and Kanasa, Jadasahi, Dijipur, Khartahat, Balajitpur, Haldipada, Manapur, Trilochanpur, Rahandia and Sirei in Puri district in Odisha. A team of TRC and Tata Steel officials undertook the relief distribution work in the affected areas. TRC has been operating in Odisha since 1961 and has been a friend of the people of the State in times of their need whenever they have been affected by natural calamities.
The month of October 1999 proved to be catastrophic for coastal Odisha, which was hit by the Super Cyclone, rendering thousands homeless. At that time, TRC, besides distributing immediate relief material to more than one lakh families, built 435 houses and 24 school-cum-cyclone shelters for the affected. It provided relief to more than five lakh families and helped to bring them back to mainstream society whenever severe floods affected the State between 1999 and 2008. Tata Relief Committee has been recognised by Odisha State Disaster Mitigation Authority (OSDMA) for its outstanding contribution during flood relief operations in 2008.
It’s said, when there is a will, there is a way. Mr Sanjeev Lakra, son of Mr Athnus Lakra (an employee of Joda East Iron Mine) of Tata Steel has proved this. The 22-year-old received the best defender award from Hon’ble Minister of Sports & Higher Education, Government of Odisha, Mr. Badri Narayan Patra, in the concluding ceremony of the Inter Divisional District Football Tournament held at Keonjhar recently.
Sixteen teams qualifying in the zonal round participated in the tournament. The District Athletic Association of Keonjhar organized the tournament at the Keonjhar Stadium. Mr Lakra dominated the play throughout the tournament and successfully resisted the attacks of opponent players. This prompted the organisers to select him as the best defender. Carl Lewis Athletic Association, Joda has congratulated him for his performance.
Tata Steel Rural Development Society, in association with Carl Lewis Athletic Association, is regularly organising Inter Village Football Tournaments in the rural areas to identify new talent. The Company has provided sports materials like Jerseys and shoes to the Carl Lewis Association. It has also made available a well-furnished stadium (Central Play Ground, Joda) for the practice of the players.
To ensure better health care facilities for the people living in and around its areas of operations, Tata Steel has taken various measures like setting up hospitals, mobile health clinics and health camps among others. In yet another endeavour to provide better health care to the people living in and around Joda in Keonjhar district of Odisha, Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS), in association with Tata Steel Ferro Alloys Plant (FAP) and Tata Steel Family Initiatives Foundation, Jamshedpur organised a health camp at Bamebari near Joda.
The camp was organised on 10th September 2011 at the Recreation Club of Bamebari Manganese Mine of Tata Steel. Mr Bibhudatta Nanda (Head, Ferro Alloys Plant, Joda) joined as the Chief Guest and inaugurated the programme. Specialist doctors from Tata Steel Family Initiatives Foundations, Dr. Tejender Kaur, and Dr. S. Sardar along with the staff of TSRDS contributed to the successful conduct of the camp. The patients were examined for diseases relating to skin, ENT, pediatrics, T.B, gynecology, blood pressure and malaria among others. Besides, free medicines were distributed to the patients. In all, 153 patients from the neighbouring areas of Bamebari availed the benefit of the camp.

All living beings on earth need water for survival and without water there would not be any life. However, consuming unsafe drinking water may lead to several water borne diseases, and other long term and chronic health problems. In this context, drinking water should be free from microorganisms, free from harmful chemical and other pollutants. Tata Steel is committed to the overall development of the people displaced by its Greenfield projects. To provide safe drinking water to the families living in the Tata Rehabilitation colonies at Gopalpur, the Company laid the foundation stone for a drinking water project. Dr Pradip Kumar Panigrahi, Hon’ble MLA, Gopalpur laid the foundation stone for the drinking water project.
The displaced families living in the Tata Rehabilitation colonies of Badapur, Sindhigaon, Patrapur, Paikapada and Kalipalli villages would benefit out of it.
