Tata Steel, in its effort to provide avenues for sustainable development to the people of Odisha, has undertaken several initiatives towards the development of agriculture in the region. Tata Steel Rural Development Society as a part of its initiatives has focused on improving agricultural productivity through a number of measures.

Ganjam Land and Water Management Programme

TSRDS took up the job of reviving 29 non-functional lift irrigation systems in Hinjilicut block, of which 22 were completed by end of FY09, covering over 720 acres of land benefiting 1400 families.

Kitchen Garden in Villages

TSRDS Joda has been providing seeds of various vegetables to villagers and training them in the methods of kitchen gardening. Many families in Khuntpani village have started Kitchen garden in their home in small scale. Now they are using these vegetables for their own use and also thinking of starting this gardening on a larger scale to be able to sell the produce in local markets and get a good return.

Joda Wasteland Development

A plot of wasteland of nearly one acre, in Joda East was given to TSRDS to try out some innovative methods to convert the land for agricultural productivity. TSRDS mobilised a group of youth club members, who formed an SHG to take up this initiative. They worked on the land diligently and the labour paid off when it began to produce vegetables like bottle gourd, ladies finger, spinach, cabbage, capsicum etc.
